It is thought that in <em>14th century<\/em> if there were 72, while today there are 14 left. Wanting to make a comparison (risky) with cities <em>US<\/em>, <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong> could be considered a <em>medieval downtown<\/em> by <em>Manhattan<\/em> o <em>Chicago<\/em>. The name comes from <em><strong>Geminiano<\/strong><\/em> which was <em>Bishop of Modena<\/em> and then <em>Patron Saint<\/em> as well as <em>Modena<\/em> even of <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong> and that tradition indicates him as the protector of the city during the invasion of the <em>Unni<\/em> led by <em>Attila<\/em>. <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong> was an important city of the <em>middle ages<\/em> being located on the <em>Via Francigena<\/em>, one of the three most important religious pilgrimage routes together with that of the <em><strong>Holy Land<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Santiago de Campostela<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the interesting places to visit in <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong>: the <em>Collegiate Church<\/em>, the <em>Big Tower<\/em> (accessed), <em>Cathedral Square<\/em>, <em>Cistern Square<\/em>, the <em>Walls of San Gimignano<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The hill where it stands <strong>Volterra<\/strong> is thought to have been already inhabited in the first <em>iron age<\/em> (around s<em>thirteenth century b.c.<\/em>) and its first urban nucleus took place with all probability around the end of the '80s.<em>8th century BC<\/em> We are in full age <em>etruscan<\/em> e <strong>Volterra<\/strong>, along with <em>Arezzo<\/em>, <em>Cortona<\/em>, <em>Perugia<\/em>, <em>Closed<\/em>, <em>Orvieto<\/em>, <em>Populonia<\/em>, <em>Vetulonia<\/em>, <em>Vulci<\/em>, <em>Tarquinia<\/em>, <em>Cerveteri<\/em> e <em>Veio<\/em> was part of the <em>Confederation of the twelve cities<\/em> main (state) of the<em>Etruria<\/em> (territory more or less corresponding to the current<strong><em>Tuscany<\/em><\/strong>). The <em>walls<\/em> surrounding the city were powerful fortifications that protected inhabitants, fields and livestock from looting often at the hands of the <em>Galli<\/em> and the <em>Ligurians<\/em>. During the period <em>Roman<\/em> maintained good relations with <strong>Rome<\/strong>. In <em>middle ages<\/em> and for much of the <em>Renaissance<\/em> was an independent city from <em><strong>Florence<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Siena<\/strong><\/em> e <em><strong>Pisa<\/strong><\/em> first and submitted to <strong><em>Florence<\/em><\/strong> Next. The many stores of <em>Alabaster<\/em>, extracted and processed here from time immemorial, present in the city are also a feature that have made it famous.<\/p>\n<p>Among the interesting places to visit in <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong>The <em>Cathedral<\/em>, ll <em>Priori Palace<\/em>The <em>Roman theater<\/em>The <em>Medicean Fortress<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cit\"><i class=\"fas fa-clock\"><\/i><em> The excursion of <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong> e <strong>Volterra<\/strong> involves departure from Florence (at the facility where you are staying: Hotel or Apartment) at 9am and a return at 5pm. The total duration, including transportation, is approx. <strong>8 hours<\/strong>.
