{"id":1451,"date":"2020-06-05T18:30:35","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T16:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nccfirenzewp.nccfirenze.it\/?post_type=product&#038;p=1451"},"modified":"2026-04-12T23:28:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T21:28:43","slug":"pienza-and-montepulciano-cheese-and-nobile-wine-tour","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.nccfirenze.com\/en\/product\/pienza-and-montepulciano-cheese-and-noble-wine-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Pienza + Montepulciano's Cheese &amp; Nobile Wine Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"long-desc\">\n<p><strong>Pienza<\/strong> is a small village located in the <em>Orcia Valley<\/em> which until shortly after the middle of the 1400s was called <em>Corsignano<\/em> and that gave birth to the character that more than others has made it famous by changing its name, face and notoriety: <strong><em>Aeneas Piccolomini<\/em><\/strong> which became <em><strong>Pope Pius II<\/strong><\/em> that with a new architecture transformed the ancient village in '<em>Ideal Renaissance City<\/em>' transforming it into the current <strong>Pienza<\/strong>. The surrounding area, famous for its beautiful landscapes typical of the <em>Val d'Orcia Natural Park<\/em> and also made famous by recent films including '<em>the Gladiator<\/em>' It is rich in pastures for sheep and farmhouses that produce cheese. <em>The pecorino cheese of<\/em> <strong>Pienza<\/strong> is in fact one of the gastronomic specialties of this area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> rises on a hill over 600 meters above sea level and is only 15 minutes away from <strong>Pienza<\/strong>. The drawing with the circle of walls highlights the typical village <em>medieval<\/em> of the 1300s although the origins of <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> date back to the period <em>etruscan<\/em> and the discovery of findings suggest that its existence dates back even between the <em>IX<\/em> e <em>III century b.c.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With a view to <em>east<\/em> towards the<em><strong>Umbria<\/strong><\/em> (it is easy from here to see the <em>Lake Trasimeno<\/em> but also <strong>Cortona<\/strong>) and to <em>west<\/em> towards <strong>Montalcino<\/strong> and the whole <em>Orcia Valley <\/em>that is explained between the two cities, <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> branches off into small streets (all uphill if you start from the bottom and all downhill if you start from the top - Piazza Grande) where you can find, in addition to nice restaurants, stores and historic buildings, the famous <em>Wineries of <strong>Noble Wine<\/strong><\/em> (<strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> is perhaps the only example in Italy where wine cellars in the city can be visited and tasted). The area around <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> is also rich in wineries located in one of the most favorable territories for the cultivation of grape <em>Sangiovese<\/em> which is better known here as <em>Blackthorn<\/em> and which for centuries has produced the <em>Noble Wine of<\/em> <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> among the most ancient wines of<em>Italy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cit\"><i class=\"fas fa-clock\"><\/i><em> The Cheese and Wine Tour of <strong>Pienza<\/strong> e <strong>Montepulciano<\/strong> foresees the departure from <strong>Florence<\/strong> at 9am and a return between 6 and 7pm. The total duration, including transportation, is approx. <strong><strong>9\/10<\/strong> hours<\/strong>. There will be a stop for wine tasting at one or more wineries (combined with lunch if you want at one of the two) and a visit to the following wineries <strong><em>Montepulciano<\/em><\/strong> and (optional) <strong><em>Pienza<\/em><\/strong><\/em>.
